Residency Summary
Lazaro Cardenas Batel spoke on democracy, security and state capacity in Mexico at a public talk. During his stay he also guest lectured in classes and met with students and leaders and members of the Mexican community in San Diego. He was in residence as a joint fellow with the Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies.
Biography
Lazaro Cardenas Batel is the former governor of Michoacan, Mexico, representing the Party of the Democratic Revolution. Before serving as governor from 2002 – 2008, he represented his home state in both the federal Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. He is a member of a distinguished political family: his grandfather, Lazaro Cardenas del Rio, served as president of Mexico from 1934 – 1940, and his father, Gov. Cuauhtemoc Cardenas, was a three-time presidential candidate. Lazaro Cardenas Batel recently served as a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Institute in Washington, D.C., where he focused on immigrant reform in the U.S., immigration in U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Latin America relations.
