Residency Summary
Francisco de Paula Gutierrez spoke on “Central America after the Great Recession: Challenges and Opportunities,” sharing his insights on the current economic situation of the region and each of the countries and the challenges they faced in a slow growth world. As former president of the Central Bank of Costa Rica during the 2008 – 2009 economic crisis, he had the opportunity to share his experience with GPS students. He also attended a seminar on “Economics of Religion” and a conference on "Cuba Today" that discussed the options and challenges of the country as it moves in its reform path.
Biography
Francisco de Paula Gutierrez teaches of economics and finance at INCAE Business School. He was the Minister of Finance of Costa Rica (1996 – 1998), president of the Central Bank of Costa Rica (2002 – 2010). He is currently the president of Consejeros Economicos y Financieros, S.A., a well-known consulting firm devoted to the analysis of the Central American economies. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
