Residency Summary

Jacques Marcovitch presented “Economics of Climate Change in Brazil: Costs and Opportunities” and highlighted major environmental changes that occurred in the last 20 years, and advocated moving from rhetoric to metrics to achieve sustainability goals. He met with students, faculty, community leaders and fellow academics to discuss the challenges of global competition through new linkages to strengthen innovation and competitiveness, to deepen relations between Mexico and Brazil and to stimulate shared learning on public policy design and implementation, as well as on new ways to build mutually beneficial economic ties with Asia. He also met with Qualcomm Inc. leading engineers and discussed research, innovation and Brazil’s regional sustainable development with focus on the Amazon Biome.

Biography

Jacques Marcovitch teaches strategy and international affairs at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil. He is a member of various important groups, such as the International Relations and Development Studies Institute in Geneva and the Global Agenda Council on the Future of Latin America. He is a recipient of numerous international awards, such as Doctor Honoris Causa, Universite Lumiere, Lyon; Officier de l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques and Chevalier de la Legion d´Honneur (France); and the Grao-Cruz da Ordem de Rio Branco and Medal of Scientific Merit (Brazil). A management graduate of Vanderbilt University, he has been researching the implementation of policies to reduce emissions that are a leading cause of global warming since 2002.
