Residency Summary
Top Mexican journalist Adela Navarro Bello had various opportunities to speak with faculty, students and community members on the realities of the drug war and what is being done, as well as the history and importance of Zeta and other magazines. Her visit provided students with a unique opportunity to gain insight into cross-border relations and the Mexican government’s policies in fighting the drug war.
Biography
As co-director of the Tijuana-based weekly Zeta, she has received numerous awards for her fearless reporting and editorial policy, including the 2007 International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists and the 2011 Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation. She was included in Newsweek's "150 Women Who Shake the World." Though 69 of her colleagues have been murdered during Mexico’s drug war, she continues to publish investigative news stories about drug trafficking and corruption in Baja California.
