Residency Summary

Robert Hormats met with both students, scholars and members of the San Diego community with whom he discussed issues pertaining to the Middle East, China and his experiences in the private and public sector. Hormats’s residency also overlapped GPS’ annual Asian New Year Festival, which he attended, and he was the guest of honor at China Focus student group’s happy hour.

Biography

Robert Hormats is vice chairman at Kissinger Associates Inc. in New York. At Kissinger Associates, he analyses emerging market geopolitical and macroeconomic risk for his clients.

Previously, Hormats served as Under Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Environmental Affairs from September 2009 to July 2013. Prior to this, he was vice chairman of Goldman Sachs (International) for 25 years.

Hormats earned a Ph.D. in international economics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and an M.A. and B.A. from Tufts University. He has been a visiting lecturer at Princeton University. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Economic Club of New York. His publications include “The Price of Liberty: Paying for America’s Wars from the Revolution to the War on Terror” and “Abraham Lincoln and the Global Economy.”
