Biography
Atanu Chakraborty served as India’s secretary in the Ministry of Finance in the Departments of Economic Affairs (2019–2020) and Investment and Public Asset Management (2018–2019). Currently, he is the part-time chairman of HDFC Bank, where he was appointed by the Reserve Bank of India in May 2021. During his 35-year career as a civil servant, he coordinated economic policy, managed project finance from multilateral institutions, formulated policy for capital markets and worked in privatizing state-owned enterprises.
Within the private sector, he has been chief executive of companies in the petroleum and fertilizer sectors, including the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation and Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals.
Chakraborty holds an M.B.A. from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom and received his bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra.
